Cricket civilizes people and creates good gentlemen. I want everyone to play cricket in Zimbabwe; I want ours to be a nation of gentlemen.

– Robert Mugabe

Cricket, the strange old game is not everyone’s cup of tea. Founded in Southeast England and shipped across the globe, the sport continues to evolve and increase in popularity every year. The game is not as action-packed as either of soccer or American Football and will never be, but that’s not where the beauty of this game lies in.

There are 3 different formats with 42 complicated and confusing rules. While one format lasts for 3 hours, one lasts for 5 days. Yes, 5 days might sound a bit too much for some of you, but for cricket fans, those 5 days bring out a mixture of unmatched joy, agony, anger and sorrow. Cricket brings out the best and the worst in you as a person, it gives you a platform where you can express yourself without a care in the world. The impact cricket as on you as a person is undeniable.

From a player’s perspective, the 5 days you spend on the field is not only challenging mentally and physically but is also extremely draining. You don’t care tho, you don’t care because you love every moment of it. Being on the field, running around like a kid with no worries is a dream come true for every single cricketer.

Cricket’s real beauty lies in bringing together people from different countries with different beliefs and ideologies and allowing them to be one big family. Make no mistake, the beauty of this game does not end there, there’s more to this weird sport. Just ask Afghanistan or Nepal.

Afghanistan, a war-torn country found peace and joy in cricket. There are more important things in life than a mere sport, but if that sport can help bring joy to you during the darkest of times, it sure is a pretty good thing.

There’s something about cricket that cannot be explained in words, something that can only be felt. It’s not the best sport in the world, neither is it the most entertaining one, but cricket is god-damned special.

The funny old sport is changing with new rules and new formats being introduced ever so often, but the essence of the game remains unchanged; to bring love and joy to the world; to help you forget your troubles for a short time and allow you to feel life in a way you can’t explain.

This strange game might not make sense to a lot, but is a way of life for many.
